European Commission Allocates €910 Million to Strengthen Defence Capabilities

European Commission Invests €910 Million in Defence Innovation
The European Commission is set to make a significant impact on the continent’s defence capabilities with a robust investment of €910 million under the 2024 edition of the European Defence Fund (EDF). This initiative aims to forge a stronger and more innovative defence industry in Europe, addressing critical capability gaps such as force mobility and drone defence through enhanced collaboration between European science and industry.
In a historic move, Ukrainian defence industries will now be eligible to participate in EDF projects, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between Ukraine and the European defence sector. This collaboration builds on outreach efforts from the EU Defence Innovation Office based in Kyiv, promoting greater integration of Ukraine into the European defence industrial landscape and bolstering shared security objectives.
Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “The selected proposals support the development of critical capabilities such as air and missile defence systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. These advancements will enable European armed forces to effectively respond to emerging threats and protect our citizens, enhancing our collective defence and supporting partners like Ukraine in their resistance against foreign aggression.”
The fourth edition of the EDF has garnered unprecedented enthusiasm from both the EU defence industry and research institutions, attracting a record 299 proposals involving 625 legal entities from 25 EU Member States and Norway. This response signals a growing commitment to pan-European collaboration and joint strategic development in defence capabilities.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in this initiative, with over 38% of participating entities being SMEs and they collectively receiving more than 27% of the funding requested. Of the total investment, over €360 million is allocated for 39 research projects, while €539 million is dedicated to 23 capability development projects.
As Europe seeks to strengthen its defence infrastructure and response capabilities, this significant investment represents both a commitment to innovation and a collaborative effort to enhance security on the continent. The integration of Ukraine into this framework further reflects the urgency of cooperative defence strategies amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
