European Commission VP Voices Concern Over Media Freedom in KR

European Union continues to voice concerns over freedom of speech and human rights in Kyrgyzstan

The Ambassador of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic, Marilyn Josefson, reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting democratic values during a briefing today. Her comments came in response to the visit of European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Shinas to the Kyrgyz Republic.

According to Josefson, while the primary focus of Shinas’ visit was to prepare for an upcoming forum on January 29-30, 2024, discussions with Kyrgyz authorities also raised concerns about freedom of speech and respect for human rights.

During meetings with the President, the head of the Cabinet, and the Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Vice-President of the European Commission emphasized the European Commission and the EU’s clear position on these issues. The EU has consistently urged Kyrgyzstan to maintain its reputation as a country with an active civil society and independent media, where journalists can conduct professional activities without interference.

Josefson emphasized that the EU’s stance remains unchanged, and that Kyrgyzstan is traditionally recognized for its democratic traditions and active civil society. She stressed the importance of upholding these values to ensure that Kyrgyzstan remains a country where freedom of speech and human rights are respected.

The European Union’s ongoing support for democratic values in Kyrgyzstan underscores its commitment to promoting and safeguarding fundamental freedoms and human rights in the region.
