Europe’s Largest Solar Power Plant Makes Debut at Airport
The largest solar power plant in Europe has been inaugurated at the Italian Fiumicino Airport in Rome, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The solar farm, comprised of 55,000 panels, is located along the eastern side of runway No. 3 and is now the largest photovoltaic system in Europe.
Italy’s Minister of Energy was present at the opening of the solar power plant, emphasizing the importance of such projects in reducing carbon emissions. The airport is expected to cut over 11,000 tons of carbon emissions annually as a result of this initiative.
Minister Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin highlighted the potential for similar projects to be implemented in other locations besides airports, such as abandoned quarries or areas between highways and railways. Italy has plenty of land that could be repurposed for renewable energy projects, contributing to the growth of the green economy.
Fiumicino International Airport, serving nearly 50 million passengers annually, has been recognized as the best airport in Europe for seven consecutive years. Authorities aim to make this airport, and the country as a whole, a model for sustainable practices and the development of the green economy on a global scale.
