CHP Leader Özgür Özel Addresses Supporters After Attack in Istanbul
In the wake of a recent attack in Istanbul, Özgür Özel, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), returned to Ankara to rally support within his party. The CHP convened late in the evening at their Ankara Provincial Headquarters, drawing a substantial crowd that included Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş and a number of party officials and deputies.
Özel shared that his visit to Istanbul was not only to attend a funeral for a colleague, Sureyya Önder, but also to reinforce the party’s enduring commitment to peace, brotherhood, and a collective future. He emphasized the significance of their mission, stating, “We went to walk the honorable path toward the future, promoting positive values in the face of adversity.”
The CHP leader expressed his resolve with a powerful declaration: "We will not kneel, we will not surrender.” He described the determination of his supporters, remarking, “We are like crushed flour; resilient and ready to rise up again. Hitting us will not bring salvation; instead, it will strengthen our resolve.”
Özel further elaborated on the motivations behind the attack, drawing a connection to ongoing political persecution faced by the CHP and allies such as İmamoglu. He declared, “This attack cannot be seen as an isolated event or merely a matter of political rivalry. It is a reflection of a wider struggle against threats to our liberties and justice.”
As Özgür Özel concluded his address, he reaffirmed the party’s commitment to standing united against oppression and vowed to continue their fight for justice and democracy in Turkey.
