Minister Uraloglu Discusses Social Media Regulations with TikTok President
In a recent meeting, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu welcomed Fatih Kafadar, the President of BYTEDANCE/TikTok Relations and Public Policies for Turkey and the Levant region. The discussions focused on social media engagement and responsibilities.
Uraloglu emphasized the crucial role of social media in the digital landscape, noting that while it presents great opportunities for connection and creativity, it also comes with significant risks. "It is essential that social media platforms take on responsibilities and cooperate with us in addressing these challenges," he stated.
Tackling Cyberbullying and Online Safety for Youth
A major concern raised by Uraloglu was the safety of young users, particularly those under 16 years old, who are increasingly vulnerable to cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content. "This is a matter we must all approach with seriousness. The safety of our children and youth in digital environments is paramount," he remarked.
He highlighted the comprehensive consultations conducted by the Ministry of Family and Social Services regarding the social media usage of minors. Uraloglu revealed plans to implement a gradual age limit on social media access, including specific regulations for children up to 13 years old.
The Minister also underscored the need for stronger control mechanisms to combat harmful content online and increase accountability among digital platforms.
With these discussions, Turkey aims to enhance the digital safety net for its young population, ensuring that they can engage with social media in a secure and responsible manner. As this initiative progresses, it signals a growing recognition of the importance of safeguarding youth in an increasingly digital world.
