Commemoration for Sirrı Süreyya Önder Held in Turkish Grand National Assembly
The Turkish Grand National Assembly held a solemn commemoration for Sirrı Süreyya Önder, the Parliamentary Deputy Chairman and a member of the Democratic Party, who recently passed away due to heart disease. Önder had been hospitalized prior to his death, and his contributions to Turkish politics were honored during the event.
During the condolence program, Numan Kurtulmuş, the President of the Grand National Assembly, delivered remarks reflecting on Önder’s legacy. He emphasized that Önder played a crucial role in advocating for peace and contributed significantly to a terrorism-free Türkiye. "Terrorism has greatly impacted the progress of Türkiye," Kurtulmuş stated, highlighting Önder’s dedication to promoting sisterhood and brotherhood within the nation.
MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) leader Devlet Bahçeli also attended the ceremony, further underscoring the respect and recognition afforded to Önder’s life and work.
Kurtulmuş articulated that Önder’s ideals were rooted in the belief that silence is a prerequisite for peace, marking a significant period in Turkish history aimed at achieving harmony without the shadow of terrorism. He expressed hope that Önder would be remembered not only for his political achievements but also as an intellectual and a friendly figure within the community. "May God have mercy on him," he added solemnly.
