Cooperation Between Turkmenistan and World Bank Discussed
Key aspects of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the World Bank were recently deliberated upon during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Antonella Bassani. Regional directors of the World Bank and representatives of the International Finance Corporation were also present at the meeting, which took place in Ashgabat on February 28, 2025.
The discussions centered around various current issues of bilateral cooperation, with a focus on the priorities of Turkmenistan’s partnership with the World Bank. Water resources management, energy, transportation, and connectivity were highlighted as key areas of interest for collaboration between the two parties.
During the meeting, Turkmenistan reiterated its stance on resolving water-related challenges in the Central Asian region, emphasizing three guiding principles. These principles include adherence to international law, consideration of the interests of all regional states, and the involvement of international organizations such as the United Nations in the resolution process.
The importance of ensuring that any construction of hydraulic structures and water management facilities on transboundary rivers in Central Asia meets high international standards in terms of technology, environmental impact, and technical specifications was also underscored during the discussions.
Additionally, the participants delved into joint efforts in the areas of transportation, interconnectivity, methane emission reduction, and the promotion of renewable energy sources.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed their commitment to further enhancing their cooperation and collaboration in various key areas for the mutual benefit of Turkmenistan and the World Bank.
