Exploring Future Collaborations with the Turkish Defense Forces

Hungarian and Turkish Military Chiefs Meet to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

General Gábor Böröndi, the Chief of the General Staff of the Hungarian Defense Forces, recently welcomed his Turkish counterpart, General Metin Gürak, to Hungary for the first time. The two military leaders met for bilateral talks to reinforce the relationship between their respective armies.

The meeting, which took place at the György Klapka 1st Armored Brigade in Tata, northwestern Hungary, highlighted the regular relations between the two NATO allies’ armed forces. General Gürak’s visit included a military tribute at Heroes’ Square, where he placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

During his visit, General Gürak also met with Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the Minister of Defense, to discuss ways to enhance Hungarian-Turkish military cooperation and explore opportunities for joint initiatives. General Böröndi emphasized the significance of strengthening alliances and collaborating to improve the capabilities of both the Turkish and Hungarian forces.

One area of focus for the two chiefs of staff was the Turkish forces’ participation in a battalion battle group, demonstrated during the Adaptive Hussars 2023 multi-national exercise. Additionally, the leaders visited Székesfehérvár and Tata to learn about the Hungarian Defense Forces’ National Deployable Communications and Information System Module-E (DCM-E) and to observe a static demonstration of newly acquired military equipment.

General Böröndi highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation in key areas such as high-altitude parachute deployment, special operations, and air force collaboration. The meeting between the Hungarian and Turkish military chiefs aimed to strengthen joint preparations and training, paving the way for deeper military collaboration in the future.

The visit concluded with a presentation of the Gidran combat vehicle, underscoring the shared technologies and equipment used by both the Hungarian and Turkish forces. As the two countries continue to build their partnership, the focus remains on maximizing training, education, and other forms of cooperation to enhance their military capabilities.
