Exploring Strengths and Resources: A Detailed Analysis

The military strength of Uzbekistan is often underestimated due to limited official data and inaccuracies in international rankings like the Global Firepower Index (GFP). As conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to highlight the importance of military power and preparedness, Uzbekistan’s strategic location in Central Asia makes it a key player in regional security.
Despite being ranked 65th in the 2024 GFP, Uzbekistan’s military potential is far greater than commonly perceived. One major oversight in the assessment is the exclusion of Uzbekistan’s vast reserve forces, which consist of around 10 million able-bodied men aged 18 to 35. This significant demographic provides the country with a crucial strategic advantage, enhancing its defense capabilities and readiness for prolonged military operations.
Contrary to the GFP’s estimation of 48,000 active soldiers, Uzbekistan actually has closer to 68,000 soldiers, along with 20,000 paramilitary personnel and over 30,000 National Guard members. Additionally, the country’s defense budget is significantly higher than reported, totaling around $3 billion, with a strong purchasing power parity estimated at $319 billion. These financial resources support ongoing modernization efforts and ensure long-term preparedness for national defense.
Uzbekistan’s well-developed logistics infrastructure, modernized military equipment, and comprehensive training programs further bolster its military capabilities. The country’s strategic location in Central Asia, combined with its energy independence from significant gas and coal reserves, provides additional resilience in military operations. However, global rankings fail to adequately acknowledge these strengths and often overlook Uzbekistan’s central role in regional security dynamics.
Mirshohid Aslanov, Director of the Center for Progressive Reforms, highlights the need for a reassessment of Uzbekistan’s military potential to include factors like reserve forces, accurate budget data, logistics infrastructure, modernization efforts, and energy independence. By taking these factors into account, a more accurate and complete picture of Uzbekistan’s military strength can be obtained, showcasing the country’s true capabilities on the global stage.
