Famed Romanian Choir Makes Historic Debut in Kazakhstan
First-Ever Performance of Romania’s Madrigal Choir in Kazakhstan
ASTANA – The renowned Romanian national chamber choir, Madrigal – Marin Constantin, will grace Kazakhstan with its presence for the first time, performing at the prestigious Astana Opera on May 4. This event, reported by the theatre’s press service, is set to be a significant cultural milestone.
The concert, titled “Madrigal: The Silk Road,” promises to take audiences on a unique musical journey inspired by the ancient trade route. Featuring a rich and diverse repertoire, the program includes pieces in Chinese, Kazakh, and Georgian, as well as selections from Persian and Indian cultures. It will also showcase works from Byzantium, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and England.
Founded in 1963, the Madrigal Choir has captivated audiences worldwide, touring over 450 cities across nearly 40 countries on four continents. In 2025, the ensemble will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its legendary founder, Constantin Marin, with a series of global cultural events.
Anna Ungureanu, the principal conductor, highlighted the concert’s symbolic importance, noting its diplomatic significance. “It is likely the first of its kind to revive the cultural connections forged centuries ago along the trade routes of the Silk Road. In this context, we see Kazakhstan as the most vital link in Central Asia—one that bridges Europe with China, and the West with the Far East,” she expressed.
A notable part of the program will be the choir’s premiere performance of Kazakh folk songs, including “Iapurai” and “Agugai.” Ungureanu conveyed the excitement of the choir members for this repertoire, emphasizing their genuine interest in Kazakh culture. “I feel inspired by the melodic-rhythmic structures and the sensitivity of the messages in the lyrics,” she added.
The choir is honored to kick off their tour at Astana Opera, setting the stage for what promises to be a memorable event blending musical artistry with cultural dialogue.
