Fenerbahçe Finalizes Purchase of İrfan Can After Injury to First Goalkeeper
Fenerbahçe has exercised its purchase option for İrfan Can, the goalkeeper who stepped up to protect the goal after the injury of its primary goalkeeper, Altay Bayındır. İrfan Can was initially rented by Fenerbahçe from Göztepe at the beginning of the season for €500,000, but the team will now pay €1.2 million to make his transfer a permanent one. With this, Göztepe’s 24-year-old filebek player will have a total of €1.7 million entered into his account.
İrfan Can showed a consistent and reliable performance during his time at Göztepe, after coming from Adanaspor at the start of the 2020-2021 season. However, he had an altercation with the fans last season, leading to him being removed from the squad indefinitely by the management.
Trabzonspor and Premier League team Southampton were also interested in İrfan Can, but Fenerbahçe managed to secure his services. He will now become the main goalkeeper for Fenerbahçe going forward, after impressing in his time protecting the goal while Altay Bayındır recovers from his injury.
The transfer will be a boost for both Fenerbahçe and Göztepe, as they both look to improve on their performances this season. The Turkish top-flight has been very competitive this season, with many teams going head-to-head for a spot in Europe.
