Fidesz MEP demands restoration of Hungarian minority rights in Ukraine

Fidesz MEP Advocates for Minority Rights in Ukraine
Viktória Ferenc, a Fidesz MEP, has urged Ukraine to take the protection of the rights of the Hungarian minority seriously, stating that they will not accept any empty promises. Ferenc expressed her surprise at enlargement commissioner Marta Kos commending Ukraine for considering Hungary’s requests regarding the rights of the 150,000-strong Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, emphasizing that their rights have not been fully restored.
In a strong statement, Ferenc called on Ukraine to immediately address the protection of the rights of the Hungarian minority. She highlighted that during talks with the European Parliament’s foreign affairs and budgetary committees regarding the Ukraine Facility designed to aid the EU’s efforts in the country’s recovery, reconstruction, and modernization, it is essential to prioritize peace-building efforts.
Ferenc criticized the focus on reconstruction and modernization while destruction continues and people are still suffering. She emphasized the importance of using EU funding to address the real needs of the Ukrainian people who have endured so much hardship. Additionally, Ferenc pointed out that mental health support for those who have survived the conflict should be a priority.
The MEP’s call for action comes amidst ongoing tensions in Ukraine and the need for meaningful progress in ensuring the rights and well-being of minority communities. It is crucial for Ukraine to take concrete steps to protect the Hungarian minority and address the broader societal issues at hand.
