Financial struggles for pharmacies in El Aman state

Bishkek – 31 January 2025

Health Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Alymkadyr Beishenaliev, has revealed some concerning statistics regarding the financial viability of state pharmacies in the country. According to Beishenaliev, 60 percent of El Aman state pharmacies are currently operating at a loss.

During a meeting of the Ishenim and Yiman Nuru parliamentary factions, Beishenaliev provided an example, stating that a pharmacy in Leilek has a monthly income of 5,000 soms, while the pharmacist’s salary and other expenses amount to 35,000 soms. This deficit is currently being covered by the government.

Beishenaliev also clarified that no funds from the republican budget were used for the establishment of the El Aman pharmacy chain. Instead, credit funds were utilized for this purpose.

Despite the financial challenges facing the state pharmacies, Beishenaliev expressed optimism about the future of El Aman. He believes that the presence of these pharmacies has allowed the country to better compete in the pharmaceutical market.

The issue of financial sustainability for state pharmacies is a pressing concern that the government will need to address in order to ensure access to affordable healthcare for all citizens. It remains to be seen what measures will be taken to improve the financial situation of these essential healthcare providers in Kyrgyzstan.
