First Reactor of Small Nuclear Power Plant in Uzbekistan to Come Online in 5 Years

Uzbekistan is set to launch its first low-power nuclear power plant with six reactors by 2033, according to recent reports from the press service of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers. The project will see the construction of the plant near Lake Tuzkon in the Forish district of the Jizzakh region.

The cost of the project, which is based on six RITM-200N reactor units with a total capacity of 330 MW, has not been disclosed due to confidentiality reasons. The commissioning of the first reactor is expected to take place within 5 years after the start of priority work, which is set to begin this summer. Subsequent reactors will be put into operation every six months until all six reactors are operational.

The contract for the construction of the nuclear power plant was signed on May 27 during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tashkent. The agreement was made between the NPP Construction Directorate and the Atomstroyexport company, which is the engineering department of Rosatom.

The full commissioning of the small nuclear power plant is a significant step towards enhancing Uzbekistan’s energy capabilities and ensuring long-term energy security. With the development of this nuclear power plant, Uzbekistan aims to meet its increasing energy demands while also reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
