Foreign Minister Discusses Key Issues with UN Secretary-General
Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Meets with UN Secretary-General During Visit
The Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Jeenbek Kulubaev, recently met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his visit to the country. The meeting highlighted Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to the basic provisions of the UN Charter, the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, and the resolution of existing issues at both the country and regional levels.
During the talks, the leaders discussed cooperation between Central Asian countries and regional integration, which have seen significant progress in recent times. There has been a boost in political interaction, trade, and cultural exchanges among the people of Central Asia. With the commencement of large regional energy and transport projects, it is expected that interaction and trade in the region will further increase.
Key topics that were raised during the meeting included climate issues and Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives on the climate and mountain agenda. The Minister emphasized the importance of taking measures to reduce the risks associated with climate change, given the negative consequences that the world community is currently experiencing.
Kyrgyzstan, as a landlocked country, is actively advocating for the mountain agenda on the global stage, particularly within the UN. The country has been actively promoting initiatives and activities to protect the interests of mountainous nations towards sustainable development. The International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development has been declared for 2022, with the years 2023-2027 designated as the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions.
Furthermore, President Sadyr Japarov also held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his visit to the state residence in Cholpon-Ata on July 2. Guterres is currently on his tour of Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, where he aims to engage with government officials and local activists on projects related to combating climate change.
The discussions between Kyrgyzstan and the UN Secretary-General reiterated the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges and achieving sustainable development goals.
