Foreign Minister’s Response to Congo’s Bloody Conflict
The Congo is currently facing the threat of a regional war as the Rwandan-backed March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group has taken control of one of the country’s largest cities, Goma. This development has led to widespread unrest, with riots breaking out in the capital city of Kinshasa where embassies were attacked. The situation has prompted reactions from Hungarian politicians.
Reports indicate that the rebels successfully entered Goma, located along the border with Rwanda, and have been engaging in violence, including attacks on humanitarian missions and women. This escalation comes amidst a longstanding conflict in the region, rooted in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and competition for Congo’s mineral resources.
In response to the events, protests erupted in Kinshasa, with demonstrators accusing neighboring African countries and Western states of aiding the M23 rebel group. Embassies of several nations, including France, Belgium, the United States, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, were targeted and attacked by the protesters.
Adding to the tension, the M23 rebel group has vowed to advance towards Kinshasa, further complicating the situation and raising concerns about a potential migration crisis. Hungarian politicians have condemned the violence and called for the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in the African region to prevent a new wave of migration to Europe. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for peace and condemning the attacks on civilians and peacekeepers.
State Secretary Tristan Azbej noted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Congo and emphasized Hungary’s commitment to supporting refugees and displaced families in the region through initiatives like the Hungary Helps Program. Despite the challenges, Hungary remains dedicated to promoting peace and stability in the face of escalating conflict.
