Free Dog and Bike Transport offered on Hungarian Trains – Conditions Apply

Starting from 1 January, passengers traveling within Budapest will have the opportunity to transport their dogs and bikes for free on all MÁV Group trains. This new benefit, previously only available for an additional fee, will now be accessible to those with specific passes or entitlements within the capital city.
This exciting change comes as a response to feedback from passengers and is part of the Ministry of Construction and Transport’s 5-point transport action plan. The improved fare system, introduced in the spring, will now include free bicycle and dog transport within Budapest on most trains, HÉV, and VOLÁN services starting from the new year.
Passengers holding a Budapest pass, Pest county pass, free travel entitlement, or monthly pass for job seekers can take advantage of this free transport benefit for their dogs and bikes within Budapest. Cyclists will no longer have to pay for bicycle and scooter transport on various train services within the capital, making their journeys more convenient and cost-effective.
While some trains will still require the purchase of a bicycle place ticket for travel within Budapest, the overall goal is to make dog and bike transport more accessible and hassle-free for passengers. It is important to adhere to the conditions and rules set for free transport to ensure a smooth travel experience for all passengers.
For trips outside Budapest, passengers will still need to purchase specific bicycle or dog tickets, but the process has been made simpler and more affordable since the spring fare reform. Small and medium-sized dogs can now be carried in second class on local trains without a closed crate, provided they are on a leash and muzzle. Valid vaccination and pass documentation may still be required for dog transport.
Overall, these changes aim to enhance the travel experience for passengers within Budapest and make transportation of dogs and bikes more convenient and accessible. Travelers can now enjoy the benefits of free dog and bicycle transport on many train services within the capital, creating a more inclusive and efficient transport system for all.
