French Company to Upgrade Fourth Hydroelectric Unit at Toktogul HPP

Bishkek’s Toktogul HPP Begins Final Stage of Modernization Program

On February 18, 2025, the largest hydroelectric power station in Kyrgyzstan, Toktogul HPP, announced the commencement of a major modernization program. Starting from February 20, 2025, the French company GE Hydro will initiate the reconstruction of hydroelectric unit No. 4, as reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan.

This phase marks the conclusion of the station’s upgrade, with all four hydroelectric units being replaced. The total capacity of Toktogul HPP is set to increase by 240 megawatts, reaching a total of 1,440 megawatts. The modernization of the fourth hydroelectric unit alone will contribute an additional 60 megawatts to the station’s capacity.

During the reconstruction period, which is expected to last until December 2025, the station’s capacity will temporarily decrease by 300 megawatts. To mitigate this impact, the Ministry of Energy is currently in negotiations with neighboring countries for the import of electricity to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the population during the autumn-winter period. Additionally, the ministry is urging citizens to conserve electricity in light of these developments.

The modernization of Toktogul HPP represents a significant step towards enhancing Kyrgyzstan’s energy infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for electricity in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on this important project.
