The story of Esma Assad, the “Ousted First Lady” who fled to Russia with her husband Bashar Assad as their dictatorship collapsed in Syria, has captured the world’s attention. The luxurious lifestyle of the first lady, including her collection of Louis Vuitton items, was exposed when looters raided Assad’s palace in Damascus. Esma Assad, once hailed as the “rose in the desert” for her modern appearance, was revealed to have a darker side with the onset of the Syrian civil war.
Born in London in 1975 to a Syrian cardiologist father and a diplomat mother, Esma Assad, also known as “Emma,” attended the prestigious Queen’s College and later studied computer science and French literature at King’s College London. After working at top financial institutions in New York, Esma’s life took a drastic turn when she married Bashar Assad, whom she met in London.
Initially, the couple was seen as reformers, with Esma spearheading efforts to transform Syria into a cultural hub with the help of a US public relations firm. However, as the civil war in Syria erupted in 2011, Bashar Assad’s violent crackdown on dissent painted a different picture of the couple. Their use of chemical weapons on civilians and torture of prisoners exposed them as modern-day dictators hiding behind a facade of sophistication.
Dubbed the contemporary “Marie Antoinette,” Esma Assad continued to indulge in lavish shopping sprees while her country descended into chaos. Reports revealed her extravagant spending habits, including paying tens of thousands of pounds for furniture and using an alias to shop at luxury stores in London. Amidst allegations of corruption and embezzlement, the Assad family’s estimated $2 billion wealth was said to be hidden in various offshore accounts and real estate investments.
As the Assad regime crumbled under opposition pressure, the couple fled to Moscow, leaving a trail of destruction and suffering in their wake.
