Funding for ‘Radio Liberty’ and ‘Voice of America’ Suspended by U.S.
President Donald Trump’s executive order to downsize the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has had a significant impact on Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). Following this decision, both media organizations have suspended operations, raising concerns about the future of free media.
The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the President’s goal is to make the government more efficient and eliminate funding for what he considers anti-American propaganda under the guise of journalism. Michael Abramowitz, the director of Voice of America, expressed deep sorrow over the decision, highlighting the importance of VOA’s mission in countering false narratives created by America’s adversaries.
Voice of America has been instrumental in promoting democracy and freedom worldwide by providing objective news to those living under repressive regimes. Abramowitz emphasized that the recent decision severely hampers VOA’s ability to fulfill its crucial mission, which is essential in today’s world where misinformation is rampant.
