Galata Tower to Close for 1 Month for Earthquake Strengthening and Repair Works
The iconic Galata Tower in Istanbul will be closed for visitors for a period of one month starting from February 23, 2024. This closure is due to essential earthquake strengthening and repair works being carried out on the historic building.
The announcement was made by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, which also revealed that the closure is necessary for the exterior of the building to undergo repairs. According to the statement released by the General Directorate, the 8th floor of the Galata Tower has been closed to visitors since November last year due to roof repair works. Furthermore, the conservation of the tower’s finial has been completed, and georadar studies have been carried out on the body wall and floor of the building.
During the restoration works, special care will be taken to protect the nearly 400 migratory bird nests located on the walls of the Galata Tower. All applications will be carried out with consideration for the bird nests and the migration season of swifts.
The closure of the Galata Tower was announced on social media by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and Museums. The public was reminded that the closure is a necessary measure to ensure the safety and preservation of the historic structure.
Visitors and tourists planning to visit the Galata Tower in the coming month are advised to make alternative arrangements, as the popular attraction will remain inaccessible during this period.
