“Gaza Crisis reaches catastrophic levels” – Breaking News

UN Official Urges Immediate Action to Address Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
During a speech to the members of the UN Security Council, Joyce Msuya shared concerning updates on the humanitarian situation of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Emphasizing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ deep apprehension over the recent escalation in the occupied West Bank, Msuya urged for an urgent halt to these operations, stating that “the situation in Gaza is beyond desperate.”
Msuya highlighted that since October 7, 2023, there have been over a dozen briefings delivered to the Council regarding the unbearable suffering of civilian women, men, and children in Gaza. She expressed serious concerns over the increasing reports of mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. Additionally, Msuya pointed out the challenges faced by UN humanitarian workers due to Israeli obstructions, including incidents where their vehicles were shot at, making their work perilous.
Furthermore, Msuya revealed that UN staff have been unable to access their offices due to recent evacuation decisions by Israel, making planning and delivery of aid incredibly difficult. She emphasized that the lives of 2.1 million people in Gaza should not rely on luck and hope alone.
The Deputy Secretary-General questioned the world’s commitment to international legal norms designed to prevent such tragedies, asking, “What happened to our basic sense of humanity?” She described the dire conditions in Gaza where civilians are starving, thirsty, sick, and homeless, pushing them beyond the limits of endurance.
Msuya stressed the urgent need for a conducive environment for vaccination efforts against the polio virus in Gaza, highlighting the potential catastrophic consequences if the disease spreads uncontrollably.
In light of the unbearable human suffering in Gaza, Msuya called upon the Security Council and all member states to take immediate action. She urged for respect for international law, a cessation of hostilities in Gaza, and a lasting ceasefire to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.
The plea for action comes as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, demanding swift and decisive measures to address the critical humanitarian crisis affecting Palestinian civilians.
