Geologists Discover 15 Hydrocarbon Basins in Kazakhstan Holding 76 Billion Tons of Fuel
Kazakhstan Geologists Identify Potential for New Hydrocarbon Discoveries
During a recent press conference at the Central Communications Service, Erlan Akbarov, Chairman of the Committee of Geology of Kazakh Ministry of Industry and Construction, revealed promising news for Kazakhstan’s energy sector. Geologists have identified 15 sedimentary basins in the country that could hold an estimated 76 billion tons of conditional fuel resources.
Kazakhstan’s mineral resource base includes solid minerals, groundwater, and hydrocarbons, with 355 hydrocarbon deposits currently on the state’s balance sheet. Akbarov emphasized the significant prospects for discovering new hydrocarbon deposits in the country, particularly in the understudied sedimentary basins.
The Caspian basin, which currently accounts for 80% of Kazakhstan’s resource base, is one of the most developed basins in the country. However, the North-Turgai, Aral, Syrdarya, Shu-Sarysu, and Priirtysh sedimentary basins also show great potential for future exploration and development.
This year, regional studies have been conducted using various geological and geophysical methods, including a 2D seismic survey in the Eastern and Western sections of the Aral basin. The results of these studies have estimated forecast resources of 800 million tons in the Zapadny area. Additionally, the exploration of the Syrdarya sedimentary basin is scheduled to begin later this year.
With ongoing efforts to assess and develop these sedimentary basins, Kazakhstan is poised to make significant discoveries in its hydrocarbon deposits, further solidifying its position as a key player in the global energy market.
