German Chancellor Scholz came to Istanbul: What issues are on the table?
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Istanbul with his delegation and was greeted at Istanbul Airport by Turkey’s Berlin Ambassador Ahmet Başar Şen. It is anticipated that Scholz will meet with President Erdoğan and hold a joint press conference in the coming days.
During their meeting, Scholz and Erdoğan are expected to discuss various topics including the war in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, immigration, the European Union (EU), bilateral relations, and economic policies. The two leaders previously met in New York in September at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).
The discussions are set to cover the latest developments in Turkish-German relations, economic cooperation, the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, immigration issues, economy-related matters, and the potential sale of Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes. Both countries aim to strengthen their cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, and energy.
Despite ongoing differences on certain policy issues, both Turkey and Germany are keen on enhancing their collaboration. The agenda may also touch upon key matters such as the Customs Union, visa liberalization, and defense cooperation. Germany’s possible reconsideration of blocking the sale of warplanes to Turkey signifies a positive step for future collaborations.
Moreover, trade relations between the two countries aim to achieve a trade volume of $60 billion by 2023. Discussions may also address the recent hurdles faced by Turkish projects, such as the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Approvals for procuring materials for Turkish naval modernization projects further signify potential shifts in Germany’s approach.
Given Turkey’s strategic importance within NATO and amidst escalating global tensions, closer cooperation with Turkey is crucial for Germany. Addressing migration policies and concerns over security threats in Europe will also be key topics during Scholz’s visit.
