Germany Places Record $2.9 Billion Order for AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM Missiles

Germany has recently made a significant move in its armament activities amidst the ongoing Ukraine-Russian War. The country has placed an order for 969 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM Medium-Range Airborne Missiles from the United States, with an approximate value of $2.9 billion.

The order, which has been approved by the US Department of State, includes the supply of 12 AMRAAM C8 Guidance Divisions, 969 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM Medium-Range Airborne Missiles, AIM-120 Training Missiles, and additional services. The main contractor for the sale is the US company Raytheon.

AIM-120 AMRAAM is the primary Beyond Visual Range Airborne Air Missile (BVRAAM) used by NATO member countries. It has a range of 70 to 120 kilometers according to open sources, and the AIM-120D configuration is claimed to have a range of up to 150 kilometers.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM missile is integrated into various aircraft, including the F-15A/B/C/D/E Eagle/Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-22 Raptor, Eurofighter Typhoon, JAS-39 Gripen, Tornado, and Harrier. The latest version, AIM-120C8/D, is operational on all F-35 variants and is currently the only radar-guided air-to-air missile used by the F-35.

While the Turkish Air Force utilizes the lower variants of AIM-120, the AIM-120C7, and its own developed missiles, GÖKDOGAN and GÖKHAN, the AIM-120C8 has recently begun to be exported.

Germany’s latest order of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles showcases its commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities in response to evolving security challenges. The acquisition of these advanced missiles will bolster Germany’s aerial firepower and contribute to its defense preparedness.
