Germany’s Concerns Over F-35 Fighter Jets Deal with US
Amidst recent decisions by US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine, Germany has begun to express concerns over the implementation of a multi-billion deal for the purchase of F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets for the Bundeswehr. The fears stem from the possibility that the F-35A jets supplied to Germany will be equipped with a Kill Switch system, allowing the US to deactivate them if necessary.
According to reports from Bild newspaper, deliveries of the F-35 jets to Germany are scheduled to begin in 2026. However, the German government is now apprehensive about the potential consequences of this deal in light of the recent developments in Ukraine. Wolfgang Ischinger, the former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, has warned that if the US were to treat the German F-35 jets in a similar manner to what is happening in Ukraine, Germany may consider canceling the contract.
The concerns arise following President Trump’s decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine after a disagreement with Ukrainian President Zelensky. Reports indicate that the US has also stopped providing target coordinates for offensive operations in Ukraine, including the use of the HIMARS systems.
As Germany grapples with the implications of these developments, the issue of the F-35 deal with the US remains uncertain. The German government may be forced to reassess its agreement with the US based on the current geopolitical situation.
