Germany’s National Team Player Willi Orbán Honored with Prestigious Award
RB Leipzig Defender Willi Orbán Awarded Fair Play Prize for Stem Cell Donation
Bundesliga club RB Leipzig has proudly announced on its social media platforms that their defender, Willi Orbán, has been honored with a prestigious Fair Play Prize for his selfless act of donating stem cells. The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) and the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS) recognized Orbán’s remarkable contribution to saving a life.
In 2017, Willi Orbán volunteered as a stem cell donor as part of a charity campaign organized by RB Leipzig. His altruistic gesture was officially confirmed as a match for a patient in need of a transplant in February. Orbán expressed his immediate willingness to proceed with the donation upon receiving the news, stating, “This is the opportunity to save a human life with very little effort, there are no two opinions for me. I very much hope that my donation can help to completely heal the recipient.”
Despite missing a league match against Union Berlin to undergo the procedure, RB Leipzig fully supported Orbán’s decision to prioritize the life-saving measure. Head coach Marco Rose commended the defender’s dedication to donating stem cells, emphasizing the importance of such actions in the face of adversity.
On February 8, Orbán shared a post from his hospital bed, informing his followers about the donation process and highlighting the critical need for more donors. He urged others to register as potential donors, emphasizing the collective strength in spreading hope through such acts of kindness.
RB Leipzig conveyed their pride in announcing that 31-year-old Willi Orbán had received the Fair Play Prize in the Special Prize category from the DOSB and the VDS for his noble and selfless deed. The football world applauds Orbán for exemplifying true sportsmanship and humanity in a time of need.
Through his inspiring actions, Willi Orbán has not only demonstrated his prowess on the field but also his compassion and generosity off the pitch. His recognition serves as a reminder of the positive impact athletes can have on society beyond their sporting achievements.
