GM and Samsung partner to build massive battery plant

General Motors (GM) and Samsung SDI have announced plans to build a $3 billion electric vehicle battery cell plant in Indiana. The facility, located near New Carlisle, is expected to produce high nickel prismatic and cylindrical battery cells and will have an annual production capacity of 30 gigawatt hours (GWh). The plant is set to begin operations by 2026 and will create 1,700 jobs.
The joint venture EV battery manufacturing facility was announced back in April, but the location wasn’t specified at the time. The project is part of GM’s plan to accelerate its electric vehicle production and to achieve a goal of offering 30 electric models globally by 2025.
The Indiana plant is just one of several battery factories in the works, as automakers aim to secure supplies of the key component in electric vehicles. Last year, Tesla and Panasonic announced plans to open their own battery factory in Nevada, while Ford and SK Innovation are also working on establishing a battery factory in the US. As more automakers shift toward producing electric vehicles, battery production is expected to become an increasingly important sector of the automotive industry.
