Gold Smuggling Operation Thwarted Between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan
On September 20, 2024, a shocking incident occurred at the Ken-Bulun checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border. A SUV was detained for attempting to smuggle 3.3 kilograms of gold bars into the neighboring republic. This discovery was made by the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS), whose press service reported the incident.
The value of the smuggled gold was estimated to be over 30 million soms. It was found hidden in a cache within the vehicle, and there were no documents proving its legality for export.
As a result of this discovery, investigative measures are currently underway to determine the extent of the damage to the country’s budget and to identify any other individuals involved in the smuggling of precious metals.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in preventing illegal activities at border checkpoints. The SCNS is dedicated to enforcing the law and ensuring the security of the country’s borders. Further updates on this case will be provided as the investigation progresses.
