Government allocates nearly 1.5 billion soms for school lunches

Bishkek – The Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan has reported that almost 1.5 billion soms have been allocated from the budget for school meals this year.

According to the ministry, 1,495.9 billion soms have been allocated from the republican budget for providing students with nutritious meals at school. This comes after Chief Specialist Ainura Kuseinova reported that almost 245,000 students in the country remain without hot meals at school.

Kuseinova explained that 244,933 students in 300 educational institutions across the country are currently not covered by hot meal programs. She highlighted that this issue primarily affects schools without canteens, those in need of renovation, or lacking clean drinking water facilities.

To address this gap, support in organizing school meals is being provided by the UN World Food Programme to 920 educational institutions and by Mercy Corps to 900 schools in Kyrgyzstan.

Efforts are being made to ensure that all students have access to nutritious meals while at school, with a focus on improving the conditions and facilities at educational institutions across the country. The allocation of funds from the budget demonstrates the government’s commitment to the well-being and education of Kyrgyz students.
