Government Launches Program to Renovate Churches in Small Villages

Hungary to Launch New Church Renovation Program in Villages

A new church renovation program is set to be launched in Hungary, focusing on villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The State Secretary for Church and Nationality Relations of the Prime Minister’s Office, Miklós Soltész, made the announcement at the inauguration of the newly renovated Church of St. George in the village of Oszkó.

Soltész emphasized the importance of spirituality and the Christian faith in the survival of Hungarian villages. “As long as there is a church in a village, there is life there,” he stated. The government has decided to renovate churches across the Carpathian Basin to support the communities.

The Roman Catholic Church in Oszkó has already undergone significant improvements through the renovation program. Water leaks have been fixed with insulation, the electrical network was upgraded, and the interior received new flooring and tiles.

The funding allocated for the renovation in Oszkó, totaling 43 million forints (105,000 euros), has been utilized effectively according to the State Secretary. The initiative aims to revitalize smaller settlements like Oszkó, providing essential support for the local communities.

In the past 15 years, the government has also contributed to the renovation and construction of 400 religious public education institutions, demonstrating its commitment to supporting religious and cultural heritage in Hungary.

With the launch of the new church renovation program, Hungarian villages will receive much-needed support to preserve their historic churches and strengthen community ties.
