Government to Restrict Non-Euro-5 Cars in Large Cities

Uzbekistan to gradually limit use of cars that do not meet Euro-5 standard

The government of Uzbekistan has proposed a plan to gradually limit the use of cars that do not meet the Euro-5 standard in 14 cities of the country by 2030. Additionally, starting from March 1, 2024, vehicles with a total weight of more than 10 tons may be prohibited from moving on the streets of Tashkent during peak hours.

The draft of the 2024 state program also includes measures to combat dust storms and mitigate their consequences in Uzbekistan. According to the proposed plan, the following measures will be implemented from March 1, 2024:

– Constant informing of the population, especially citizens with heart, blood vessel, and respiratory diseases, about preventive measures during dust storms
– Mandatory requirements to eliminate the rising of dust and sand particles into the air on the entrance and exit roads of construction areas of 500 square meters and more
– Prohibition of movement of motor vehicles intended for cargo transportation with a permissible total weight of more than 10 tons at short intervals, with exceptions for special service vehicles

In addition to these measures, the operation of cars that do not comply with Euro-5 and higher standards may be gradually restricted in the cities of Tashkent and Nukus, as well as in regional centers, until 2030. It is also proposed to designate one working day of the month as “car-free day” aimed at reducing car traffic.

Furthermore, leaders and employees of all republican and regional executive bodies in Tashkent city are required to set an example for the population by coming to the workplace by public transport.

These initiatives are part of Uzbekistan’s efforts to address air pollution and promote sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation practices.
