Former Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis Passes Away at 88
Greek State Television ERT has reported the passing of 88-year-old former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis today. According to the news, the funeral expenses of Simitis will be covered from the public budget.
The ceremony to honor Simitis will take place on January 9 at 12:00 local time, with a special protocol to be applied for “someone who lost his life while serving as prime minister”. Following his passing, a national mourning has been declared for Simitis, and flags in all public institutions will be lowered to half-mast for 4 days.
Simitis was taken to Korinthos Hospital this morning by ambulance, where he was unfortunately found to have passed away upon arrival. Born in 1936, Simitis was a founding member of the PASOK party, which held power in Greece multiple times.
Throughout his career, Simitis served as a minister in the PASOK government on several occasions. He also held the positions of party leader and Prime Minister between 1996 and 2004. In addition to his political career, Simitis studied law and economics and was actively involved in academia, giving lectures at various universities.
The passing of Kostas Simitis marks the end of an era in Greek politics, as the country mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant.
