Greece Ready to Support Expansion of Trans Adriatic Pipeline
The Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan, Christos Kapodistrias, announced at an official reception in Baku that Greece is prepared to support the expansion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) to meet the growing energy demands. TAP is currently Greece’s third-largest natural gas importer, accounting for 25% of the country’s total gas imports.
In his statement, Kapodistrias mentioned that Greece is committed to backing the expansion of TAP if necessary to address the increasing energy needs. He also highlighted the importance of looking towards the future of energy infrastructure, mentioning the possibility of converting current gas pipelines to transport hydrogen.
The ambassador emphasized the significance of the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB) pipeline, which connects Greece with Bulgaria and plays a crucial role in ensuring energy security for countries like Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.
Kapodistrias praised the successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece in the energy sector, particularly citing the Trans Adriatic Pipeline as a key component of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC). He highlighted the strategic importance of TAP in delivering gas from Azerbaijan to Europe, addressing the continent’s energy supply challenges.
Overall, the ambassador expressed confidence in the sustainability and reliability of TAP, which has been effectively transporting natural gas from Azerbaijan to various European countries for over three years. Greece’s commitment to supporting the expansion of TAP underscores its dedication to meeting the evolving energy needs of the region.
