Guterres Welcomes Interim Syrian Government’s Commitment to Protect Civilians
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a statement regarding the current developments in Syria, emphasizing the need for increased humanitarian aid. Guterres has sent Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Aid Coordinator, to Damascus to engage with the interim government in Syria.
During his visit, Guterres met with key figures such as HTS leader Ahmed al-Shara (Abu Muhammad al-Julani) and the Prime Minister of the interim administration, Muhammad al-Bashir. Guterres praised the interim government’s commitment to protecting civilians, including humanitarian workers, and highlighted their agreements to facilitate full humanitarian access, remove bureaucratic hurdles for humanitarian workers, ensure continuity of essential public services, and engage in dialogue with the broader humanitarian community.
Guterres stated, “While the Syrian people strive to build a better future, it is crucial for the international community to support them.” He emphasized the importance of standing by the Syrian people during this critical time.
