Water Factory in Giresun Suspends Activities Following Tragic Incident
The water factory in Giresun has indefinitely suspended its activities after a fatal accident left one worker dead and two workers injured. The incident occurred when a culvert collapsed in the maintenance workshop after a heavy downpour.
In a written statement, the Giresun Governorship confirmed the suspension of the factory’s operations. The statement revealed that three factory workers were trapped under the rubble in a sinkhole-shaped dent that formed on July 10, 2023, in the Üçtepe town of the Yağlıdere district. While two of the workers were rescued with injuries, unfortunately, one worker lost his life.
The Governor’s Office has initiated both a criminal and administrative investigation into the incident. The activities of the enterprise will remain suspended until the identified deficiencies are addressed and the ongoing investigation is concluded. The public has been notified about the suspension.
As part of the investigation, three suspects were detained. The factory manager, identified as EE, was released after questioning, while the factory owner, Hakan Aslım, was arrested. The food engineer, AB, was released with judicial control. The investigation is still ongoing.
The incident took place following a heavy downpour in the Üçtepe town of the Yağlıdere district. The culvert in the machine tool maintenance workshop of the water factory collapsed, trapping three workers who were operating forklifts. Rescue teams from AFAD, AKUT, DSI, fire, and gendarmerie were dispatched to the scene. After a joint effort, Ali C. and Şenol K. were successfully rescued, but Şinasi Özdemir (46) tragically lost his life after being dragged 2 meters by the stream. The injured workers are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
This incident emphasizes the importance of thorough safety measures and regular maintenance in industrial facilities. The investigation into the water factory collapse will hopefully shed light on any negligence or misconduct that may have contributed to the tragic event.
