Harald Vilimsky Recommends Viktor Orbán for European Commission Presidency

In a surprising turn of events, Harald Vilimsky, the lead nominee of the Freedom Party of Austria’s (FPÖ) EP list, has publicly stated that Viktor Orbán should lead the European Commission. This suggestion comes as Vilimsky believes that the FPÖ should take a more central role in the political debates of the European Parliament.
According to the Austrian newspaper New Crown Newspaper, Vilimsky argues that appointing Orbán as the head of the European Commission would benefit Europe as a whole. He sees Orbán as a counterpoint to the current EU leadership and a guarantee that illegal immigration will not continue at its current rate.
In a recent statement, Vilimsky also mentioned that the EU’s apparatus should be streamlined, with certain powers returned to national governments to restore more direct democracy. While he denied any plans to abolish the direct election of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), he praised Orbán’s initiative on the subject back in February.
It remains to be seen how Orbán and the European Commission will respond to Vilimsky’s proposal. This development has certainly stirred up discussions within the EU’s political circles and among European citizens.
