Hungary Investing in Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Thermal Water Management
Hungary has been a leader in Europe when it comes to utilizing geothermal energy, and this trend is set to continue. Minister of Energy Csaba Lantos emphasized the country’s commitment to sustainable thermal water management at a recent conference held in Budapest. With the National Geothermal Energy Utilization Concept in place, Hungary aims to double the domestic use of geothermal energy by 2030.
To support this ambitious goal, the ministry has allocated over HUF 11 billion (EUR 27.5 million) in funding for drilling activities and the modernization of existing thermal wells. Additionally, the Jedlik Ányos Energy Program will provide nearly seven times more funding for the increased utilization of geothermal energy through three calls for proposals. This significant investment underscores the importance of geothermal energy as a key driver of Hungary’s green economy.
László Nagy, President of the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities, highlighted the unique potential of geothermal energy in Hungary as a locally available, predictable, and environmentally friendly energy source. By leveraging geothermal heat, Hungary could potentially replace up to one billion cubic meters of gas over a ten-year period. The recent licensing reform initiated by the Authority is expected to accelerate the nationwide adoption of geothermal energy in a short period.
Bence Gonda, Vice President for Strategy, emphasized the importance of research programs to ensure the sustainable use of thermal water resources. At the conference, experts from the Authority’s Geology Department presented detailed insights into the geothermal research program for Budapest. This initiative aims to support water management agencies and the Geothermal Energy Board (GEB) in ensuring the responsible and sustainable use of thermal water in the capital.
Overall, Hungary’s proactive approach to investing in geothermal energy underscores its commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future. As the country continues to prioritize geothermal energy, it is poised to play a leading role in the clean energy transition in Europe.
