Hatay’s Coastline Submerged in Water

Severe Storm and Rainfall Cause Flooding in Iskenderun and Dörtyol

The recent heavy rain in Hatay has led to severe flooding in Iskenderun and Dörtyol, bringing life in these coastal areas to a standstill.

The rain, which began over the weekend, caused extensive damage to the infrastructure, resulting in a 1-meter depression in Iskenderun after an earthquake, which led to the sea flooding the area. Workplaces and warehouses on Atatürk and Ulu Cami Street were filled with water, turning the avenues and streets into lakes. Rescue teams from AFAD and the fire brigade were dispatched to the region, using boats and machinery to rescue stranded individuals.

Dörtyol district also experienced similar flooding as the sea level rose after the heavy rainfall. As a precaution, the coastal road was closed to transportation, and teams began working to drain the excess water.

Unfortunately, the storm and floods have also resulted in loss of life. AFAD reported 2 deaths in Konya and Sinop, as well as 4 soldiers injured in Ankara due to the severe weather conditions.

The scenes of devastation and the impact on people’s lives highlight the urgent need for communities to be prepared for such extreme weather events. As recovery efforts get underway, it’s crucial for authorities to provide support for those affected by the flooding and to strengthen infrastructure to prevent such disasters from causing significant harm in the future.
