“Health Ministry to Cut Ties with Arab Fund for Millions Amid Controversy”

Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Health has announced its plans to denounce its agreement with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development on the construction of the Neurosurgical Center of the National Hospital. Tilek Mamadaliev, the Deputy Head of the ministry, made the announcement at a meeting of the Committee on Budget, Economic, and Fiscal Policy of the Parliament. The agreement was signed by former president Almazbek Atambayev in 2016, however, due to the pandemic and other reasons, the project was not implemented. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development was set to allocate 6 million Kuwaiti dinars (about $22 million) as a soft loan to fund the project. Mamadaliev noted that no financial transactions have occurred under the project for the past seven years, and while the loan has not been refused, the ministry plans to spend the funds on another area of medicine.
