High Medication Expenditures Uncovered in Uzbekistan’s Major Cities Through Tax Data

For the first time in Uzbekistan, tax authorities have released fiscal data on pharmaceutical sales, shedding light on how much the population spends on medical preparations. This information is based on the Product and Service Identification Code (PSIC) shown on fiscal receipts issued to consumers for purchased pharmaceuticals.

According to the Tax Committee, during the first five months of this year, the largest expenditures on medications were seen in Tashkent (2.1 trillion UZS), Samarkand (986.9 billion UZS), and Tashkent region (663.4 billion UZS). On the other hand, the lowest spending was noted in Jizzakh (201.3 billion UZS), Navoi (191.6 billion UZS), and Syrdarya (170 billion UZS) regions.

Calculating the average per capita spending on medications since the beginning of the year, the figures are as follows: 750 thousand UZS in Tashkent, 277 thousand UZS in Bukhara region, and 245.1 thousand UZS in Samarkand region. Conversely, the lowest per capita spending was observed in Kashqadaryo (120 thousand UZS), Republic of Karakalpakstan (118 thousand UZS), and Surkhandarya (114 thousand UZS).

An analysis of fiscal receipt data highlights that the majority of funds were allocated for medications to treat cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, pain relief, nervous system disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, musculoskeletal system disorders, ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) diseases, and liver diseases. This data provides valuable insights into the healthcare priorities and spending habits of the Uzbek population.
