High Obesity Rates in Uzbekistan, SanEpid Committee Reports

Uzbekistan Struggles with High Rates of Overweight and Obesity

A recent study conducted by the Committee on Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health (SanEpid Committee) and the World Health Organization has revealed concerning statistics about the state of health in Uzbekistan. The study found that half of the citizens aged 18-64 are overweight, with 20% of them classified as obese.

In addition to the high rates of overweight and obesity, the study also showed that a significant portion of the population has elevated blood cholesterol levels. While 67% of the population consumes an adequate amount of vegetables and fruits daily, 46% have elevated blood cholesterol levels.

One of the most alarming findings of the study is the average daily salt consumption of the population, which is 14.9 grams. This amount is three times more than the recommendation of the World Health Organization, which advises not to exceed 5 grams of salt per day.

The SanEpid Committee has attributed these concerning health trends to a variety of factors, including the non-observance of physical activity and nutrition norms, excessive consumption of salt, sugar, and fat, as well as insufficient consumption of vitamins and minerals. These factors have been linked to a range of health consequences, including stunted growth and mental development in young people, as well as the development of diseases such as cardiovascular, endocrine, and malignant tumors in adults.

The findings of this study highlight the urgent need for public health interventions in Uzbekistan to address the high rates of overweight and obesity, as well as to promote healthier dietary habits and increased physical activity. It is clear that concerted efforts are needed to improve the health and well-being of the population, and to prevent the serious health consequences associated with these concerning trends.
