Hollywood Actor Joins Protest for Higher Teacher Wages in Hungary
Budapest, Hungary – Hollywood actor Dean Norris, known for his role as Hank Shrader in the hit TV series Breaking Bad, was seen participating in a protest demanding higher wages for teachers in Hungary. This comes as Hungary continues to play a leading role in the movie-making industry, attracting many Hollywood celebrities.
Norris, who has Hungarian origins, is currently visiting Budapest with his children. He took to Twitter on June 16 to share his experience, posting photos that showcased his connection to Hungary. One photo featured his grandfather, while another showed his family enjoying traditional Hungarian dishes in a local restaurant. He also shared a selfie in front of the iconic Hungarian Parliament, and a picture of his son displaying a turul tattoo in front of the Buda Castle’s turul monument, symbolizing the Hungarian tribes conquering the Carpathian Basin.
Beyond sightseeing, it appears that Norris is also taking a keen interest in Hungary’s social and economic issues. One of the major concerns in the country is the low wages of Hungarian teachers. Opposition parties and teacher trade unions argue that the government’s new education law modification is making life even more difficult for educators. As a result, a demonstration was organized in front of the Hungarian Parliament on Kossuth Square to coincide with the parliamentary debate on the bill.
Norris is not the first Hollywood actor to participate in a demonstration in Hungary. Previously, Eddie Redmayne also took part in such an event. During the protest, Norris even took a selfie with András Fekete-Győr, the previous chairman of the Momentum party. Fekete-Győr mentioned in a Facebook post that he provided Norris with a crash course on Hungarian politics, and the actor expressed his support for the teachers’ struggle.
The demonstration was organized by the “Tanítanék” (I want to teach) movement and the United Student Front, and it attracted students, teachers, and representatives of teacher and student organizations and unions. Participants voiced their concerns about the new law on teachers’ career paths, stating that it would set Hungary’s education system back decades and have a detrimental impact on the country’s future. Opposition party representatives also addressed the crowd, criticizing the government for disregarding teachers’ input and accusing them of dishonesty during the parliamentary debate.
As Hollywood celebrities like Dean Norris lend their support to important causes in Hungary, it highlights the country’s growing prominence in the film industry and the need to address social and economic challenges faced by its citizens, such as the issue of low teacher wages.
