Huawei Introduces New HarmonyOS Version Independent of Android Framework

Huawei Unveils New Operating System Without Support for Android Apps

Huawei Technologies Co. has announced the release of a new version of its operating system called HarmonyOS Next. Unlike the original HarmonyOS, this new version is not based on Android and will not support Android apps.

During a recent press conference, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong described HarmonyOS Next as more user-friendly and compatible with a wide range of devices. The operating system also features an integrated AI model called Pangu, which works with the MindSpore framework.

HarmonyOS Next has been specifically designed with the Chinese market in mind, signaling Huawei’s strategic focus on its domestic consumer base.

This announcement comes after Huawei first introduced its alternative to Android in August 2019. As the tech giant continues to navigate its way through geopolitical challenges and trade restrictions, the development and release of HarmonyOS Next demonstrate Huawei’s commitment to creating its own ecosystem for its products.

It remains to be seen how consumers will respond to HarmonyOS Next and whether it will gain traction in the highly competitive operating system market.
