Hugh Riddell Takes on New Role as World Bank Country Manager for Kyrgyz Republic
Hugh Riddell has recently been appointed as the World Bank Group Country Manager for the Kyrgyz Republic, in a move aimed at providing unified leadership to better support the country’s public and private sector priorities. The international financial institution’s website announced this significant development.
In his new role, Riddell will oversee the programs of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)/International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) in the Kyrgyz Republic. This will streamline access to the full range of World Bank Group products and services, allowing for a more efficient and impactful approach to addressing global challenges and driving development in the country.
Riddell expressed his commitment to supporting the Kyrgyz Republic’s ambitious development goals, which aim to enhance the prosperity of its citizens and achieve upper-middle-income status in the near future. By providing unified leadership, the World Bank Group aims to take a more integrated approach to the projects it supports, positioning itself as a more effective partner for the government, private sector, and citizens of the country.
The World Bank Group is currently implementing a five-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF) with the Kyrgyz Republic for FY2024-28, with a focus on energy, water, and agriculture as priority sectors for financing. The institution’s efforts in the country include enhancing education and healthcare systems, improving food security, facilitating private sector investments and job creation, and strengthening institutions to build a stronger and more prosperous society.
Prior to his current role, Hugh Riddell served as the World Bank Country Manager for the Kyrgyz Republic since May 2024. He has also held positions as the World Bank Country Manager for Malawi and has a diverse background of experience in Washington, D.C., Afghanistan, and East Africa.
