Hungarian and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Meet in Budapest to Boost Relations
Hungary and Ukraine Prioritize Neighborly Relations
The Hungarian government is committed to fostering positive relations with Ukraine, with a focus on supporting the rights of ethnic Hungarians within the country. This was emphasized by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, during a recent meeting in Budapest with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andriy Sybiha.
Szijjártó expressed gratitude for Sybiha’s choice to visit Hungary as his first foreign destination, despite scheduling challenges, and congratulated him on his recent appointment. The ministers discussed the importance of promoting peace as a means of ending the suffering experienced by many amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Hungary has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts to support Ukraine, with over 1.4 million refugees receiving aid and thousands of Ukrainian children benefiting from summer camps in Hungary. Additionally, Hungary has invested significant resources, totaling 66 billion forints (EUR 166.4m), in support of Ukraine’s infrastructure and education system.
Szijjártó reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts and highlighted Hungary’s role in providing natural gas and electricity to Ukraine. He also mentioned plans to enhance cross-border infrastructure, including the development of new border crossings and logistical centers.
In addressing unresolved issues between the two countries, Szijjártó stressed the importance of mutual respect and cooperation. He called on Ukraine to restore the rights of the Hungarian ethnic community in areas such as language, education, culture, and public administration. The ministers agreed to expedite discussions on Hungary’s proposed solutions to these issues.
Szijjártó urged Ukraine to refrain from unilateral actions that could disrupt energy supplies and requested fair treatment for Hungarian companies operating in Ukraine. Despite challenges, Sybiha reassured his commitment to strengthening neighborly relations with Hungary.
Overall, the meeting between Hungarian and Ukrainian officials highlighted the shared goal of fostering positive and cooperative relations between the two countries. Efforts to address outstanding issues and support each other’s development and stability were key themes of the discussions.
