Hungarian Domestic Tourism Thrives in March

In March, guest nights at commercial and private tourism accommodations in Hungary saw a significant increase of 24.9 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, reaching a total of 2,757,000, as reported by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Tuesday.

The rise in guest nights was fueled by a surge in both domestic and foreign travellers. Domestic travellers accounted for 1,322,000 guest nights, marking a 22.4 percent increase, while foreign visitors contributed 1,435,000 guest nights, showing a 27.2 percent rise from the previous year.

The Easter holiday falling on the last weekend in March played a significant role in boosting bookings compared to 2023 when Easter was in April.

Among foreign visitors, Germans topped the list with 148,700 guest nights, followed by Czech tourists with 121,100 guest nights and visitors from the United Kingdom with 110,900 guest nights. However, guest nights spent by visitors from Asia decreased by 6.9 percent to 151,200 compared to the base period.

In terms of popular destinations, the capital city was the top choice in March, attracting 1,151,000 guest nights, while Lake Balaton secured the second position with 352,000 guest nights.

Commercial accommodations, including hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, camp sites, resorts, and hostels, also reported a revenue increase of 33 percent, totaling 47.2 billion forints.

The tourism sector in Hungary is experiencing significant growth, with a noticeable rise in both domestic and international visitors contributing to the increase in guest nights and revenue for commercial accommodations.
