Six Public Officials Make First Court Appearance in Isias Hotel Case

72 public officials face trial in the Isias Hotel case after the tragic collapse that resulted in the death of 72 individuals. Adıyaman Governorship has launched an investigation into building negligence and defects, leading to the filing of 6 lawsuits against the public officials involved in approving the building license of the hotel.
During the hearing at Adıyaman 1st High Criminal Court, the defendants, including the license office chief and Building Control Unit employee, claimed innocence and lack of knowledge regarding technical issues. They stated that the building had passed inspections and received necessary certificates, denying any conscious negligence on their part.
The Isias Hotel, which was destroyed in the February 6 earthquakes, claimed the lives of 72 people, including 25 individuals from Cyprus and 25 children. An expert report highlighted the lack of floor survey, poor concrete quality, and deviations from the project design as contributing factors to the collapse.
Apart from the public officials, the owner of the hotel, the architect, and the hotel owner’s son have already been sentenced to prison terms for their involvement in the incident. The ongoing trial sheds light on the responsibilities of those tasked with ensuring building safety and compliance with regulations.
