Hungarian Fighter Jets Join Allies in the Skies of Greece

NATO has recently wrapped up a significant air defense exercise called Ramstein Flag 24 in Greece. The exercise, which took place between September 30 and October 11, 2024, involved over 130 Allied aircraft, including Hungarian Gripen fighter jets. The event was organized by NATO’s Allied Air Command in collaboration with the Hellenic Air Force.
The aim of Ramstein Flag 24 was to showcase NATO’s determination and ability to execute the ‘Deter and Defend’ concept across member countries in the Euro-Atlantic region. This exercise marked the first iteration of the ‘Flag’ series, highlighting the importance of enhancing the capabilities of NATO allied forces and improving decision-making processes in dynamic combat environments.
Notably, this was the first time NATO’s air force participated in such a sophisticated air exercise alongside partners from other regions. Countries such as Canada, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States contributed fighter and enabler aircraft to the exercise.
The participation of Hungarian Gripen fighter jets in Ramstein Flag 24 is significant as it showcases Hungary’s commitment to strengthening cooperation within NATO. Previously, the Hungarian Air Force participated in a NATO exercise called Lion Effort in the Czech Republic, emphasizing the country’s dedication to enhancing its defense capabilities and collaborating with international partners.
Overall, the success of Ramstein Flag 24 underscores the importance of international cooperation in maintaining security and defense readiness. Such exercises not only enhance the interoperability of NATO forces but also demonstrate the alliance’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region.
