Hungarian Government Calls for Environmentally Sustainable Competitiveness
Steps Taken to Achieve Climate Neutrality, Circular Economy, and Environmental Goals Strengthen Competitiveness
The state secretary in charge of environmental affairs and the circular economy emphasized the importance of taking steps that not only lead to achieving climate neutrality, a circular economy, and environmental goals but also strengthen competitiveness. This statement came after a meeting of EU ministers responsible for environmental protection in Budapest on Friday.
During the meeting, officials agreed on the necessity of ensuring the competitiveness of the green transition, as highlighted by Anikó Raisz. Raisz also pointed out that European Union member states are facing various global environmental challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. She stressed the need for a comprehensive and systemic approach to reach the established goals, including incorporating support for sustainable investments into EU and member state economic strategies.
Raisz mentioned that the upcoming COP 29 UN climate change conference in Baku in November will be a significant international event during Hungary’s six-month presidency of the Council of the EU. Ministers at the Budapest meeting reiterated their commitment to combating climate change and emphasized the importance of developing real climate change adaptation plans to meet the targets of the Paris climate agreement.
In addition to discussing the competitiveness aspects of transitioning to a circular economy, the ministers focused on strategies to ensure that the EU leads global environmental protection efforts while remaining competitive. Adaptability and flexibility in water management were highlighted as crucial in the face of increasing droughts.
Raisz also emphasized the significance of strengthening cross-border partnerships to mitigate the impact of environmental pollution. The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of collective efforts in advancing environmental goals while boosting competitiveness.
